How We Calculate This

This calculator uses a simplified version of the ACCA Manual J 8th Edition methodology, the industry standard for residential HVAC load calculations. Here is what goes into the math:

  • Envelope heat transfer: Q = U x A x delta-T for walls, ceiling, floor, and windows
  • Infiltration: Foundation-specific base ACH (Table 5A) multiplied by climate zone stack-pressure factors
  • Solar gains: Window area x ACCA solar factors (N=19, E/W=68, S=43 BTU/hr per sqft) x SHGC
  • Internal gains: People (230 BTU/hr sensible per person), appliances (2,100 BTU/hr), lighting (500 BTU/hr)
  • Latent cooling: Based on outdoor wet-bulb temperature and moisture infiltration
  • Foundation loads: Slab F-factor method, crawlspace floor losses, or basement wall losses
